Overview
In this week’s Torah portion we are looking at Leviticus 19:1–20:27
The Portion of Qedoshim begins with the statement: “You shall be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy.”
This is followed by another 53 divine commandments in just 64 verses through which the Jewish person sanctifies themselves and relates to the holiness of God.
These include: the prohibition against idolatry, the commandment of charity, the principle of equality, the Shabbat, sexual morality, honesty in business, honour and awe of one’s parents, and the sacredness of life.
Also in Qedoshim is the command – “Love your neighbour as yourself.”
In the first century, the spiritual leader of Israel, Hillel, said “This commandment is the entire Torah, the rest is commentary”, the great sage Rabbi Akiva called it the “cardinal principle of the Torah” and Jesus of Nazareth said that, along with commandment to love God with all your heart soul, mind and strength, it summed up the entire Torah and the Prophets.
